Pada tanggal 28 Desember 2009 drummer James"The Rev"Sullivan ditemukan meninggal di rumahnya Huntington Beach. pada umur 28 tahun. Hasi otopsi tidak dapat disimpulkan.
Namun tanggal 9 juni 2010 diumumkan bahwa penyebab kematiannya adalah keracunan akibat penggunaan piskotropika yang dicampur - campur, sering juga disebut polydrug use atau "cross fading".
Dalam pernyataan dari anggota band lainnya, mereka turut berbela sungkawa atas meninggalnya The Rev dan meminta untuk menghormati privasi keluarganya:
"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time."
Website resmi Avenged Sevenfold menampilkan pesan dari keluarga Sullivan yang menyatakan terima kasih kepada penggemarnya atas dukungan mereka:

Di samping itu komentar tentang kematian Sullivan, manajer band Larry Jacobson mengungkapkan bagaimana Sullivan adalah orang yang begitu baik terhadap semua orang. Jacobson berkata dalam wawancara itu:
"He was expressive. He'd tell you how he felt about you -you didn't wonder because he'd put his arm around you," he said. "He knew how to tell his friends he loved them."
Selain Jacobson ada 50 lebih artis musik yang mengomentari tentang kematian The Rev.
Pada tanggal 6 Januari 2010 jenazah di makamkan di lokasi yang dirahasiakan.
Tanggal 5 Januari 2010,majalah kerrang! menulis artikel tentang kematian The Rev.Zacky Vegeance menunjukan perasaan-nya tentang kematian The Rev

Pada 2007 dan 2008 silam mereka pun sempat menggelar konser tur di Jakarta. Konser mereka meninggalkan kesan mendalam di hati pecintanya.

The Rev adalah anak tunggal. Pada masa kecilnya, dia seringkali dikeluarkan dari sekolah. The Rev juga sudah tujuh kali masuk penjara karena kejadian-kejadian seperti berkelahi di dalam bar.

Jimmy uses different DW rack parts including DW Super Main Rack, DW Side Rack, many clamps and boom stands for microphones and cymbals.

DW 9000 PC Single Pedal x2: The Rev only uses 2 single pedals because he doesn't use his third bass drum since it is only used for aesthetic.
Also, The Rev uses black Roc-N-Soc Nitro drum throne.

Jimmy is recognized for vocals and piano in his and Synyster Gates' side project, Pinkly Smooth. He is also utilized as a back-up vocalist in Avenged Sevenfold. Besides screaming with lead vocalist M. Shadows in songs Chapter Four and Eternal Rest, the song Critical Acclaim features Sullivan on lead vocals during the chorus of the song, both singing and screaming. His vocals are also featured in other songs from the Avenged Sevenfold eponymous album, such as "A Little Piece of Heaven", "Brompton Cocktail", "Lost", " Afterlife ", and "Almost Easy". The Rev is known for his "drumstick spinning" and his song writing ability, having written songs such as Afterlife.
The Rev is the best modern day drummer. He is like Jesus, but in the form of a drummer. Unlike other heavy metal drummers, he doesn't jus do the same double bass beat over and over again. He uses his hands and feet to make the song insane. Listen to Darkness Surrounding, the drum solo is incredible, and he is changing the beat constantly, thats what makes him great. I am a huge Avenged Sevenfold fan, and have all of their albums, and I am drummer myself, and the Rev is my idol. He should deffenitly be ahead of Joey Jordinson, and half the people on this list.
